IQOS ILUMA i One Digital Violet

How the IQOS ILUMA i One Digital Violet performs

Insert a TEREA stick and the IQOS ILUMA i One Digital Violet heats it in around 20 seconds using Smartcore Induction, IQOS's blade-free heating system. There is no blade to worry about snapping or fouling, just the stick sliding into a clean holder. Once heating finishes, a session runs for up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever comes first, and the draw stays consistent from the first pull to the last.

The matte violet shell is lightweight and sits comfortably in one hand, and because the heating element and the battery share the same body, there is no separate holder to lose track of in a bag or pocket. A full charge from the included USB-C cable takes about 90 minutes and is rated for up to 20 consecutive sessions before it needs plugging in again. The whole unit is small enough to sit in a jacket pocket or a small bag without adding much weight, which matters if you are carrying it around all day rather than leaving it on a desk.

Who chooses the i One Digital Violet

This is the device for someone who would rather charge one object than two. Because the battery sits inside the holder itself, it suits people who work through TEREA sticks at a desk, in a car or between meetings and would rather top up once at home than manage a separate pocket charger during the day. The Digital Violet finish also appeals to anyone who wants a colour that stands out from the more common black or blue devices on the market.

• Suits desk-based or single-location smokers who can charge overnight or on a break
• Suits anyone who prefers a matte violet finish to the standard black
• Less suited to heavy users who go through more than 20 sessions a day away from a charger

How it compares with the other ILUMA options

The i One sits at the compact end of the ILUMA range. Devices that split the holder and a separate pocket charger into two parts can offer more sessions between full recharges, but that means two parts to carry and to keep charged. The i One trades that extra session count for a single, smaller unit that does everything from one body, which is the main thing to weigh up if you are choosing between the two formats. If you like everything about the i One except the colour, TEREA 365 also carries it in Breeze Blue, Midnight Black and Vivid Terracotta, all built to the same specification.

Charging and using the i One Digital Violet

Setting the device up is straightforward. Charge it fully using the USB-C cable in the box, then insert a TEREA stick gently into the holder. Press and hold the button until the light starts pulsing, and wait roughly 20 seconds while it heats. From there you get up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs before the stick is spent, at which point you remove and dispose of it and can load the next one straight away.

• Charge fully via USB-C, about 90 minutes
• Insert a TEREA stick into the holder
• Press and hold the button until the light pulses
• Wait around 20 seconds for heating to finish
• Draw for up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs
• Remove and dispose of the used stick

One thing to know before you buy

The trade-off for the compact, single-body design is recharge time. Twenty sessions covers most of a day for a lot of users, but once the battery is flat, it is roughly 90 minutes back on the USB-C cable before the device is usable again, since there is no swappable pocket charger to fall back on in the meantime. Anyone who gets through more than 20 TEREA sticks in a single day, or who needs a device with no downtime at all, should weigh that against the smaller, one-piece design before ordering.
